The word antioxidant is thrown around a lot today in the health community, but few actually know what antioxidants are, and how they can benefit our health. Antioxidants can be found in just about anything most people would consider healthy. Vegetables and fruits are one of these things, hence the reason pomegranate is commonly brought up in discussion about antioxidants. Antioxidants can be found in vitamins as well as other nutritional substances.
Antioxidants are molecules that aid in the prevention of the oxidations of other healthy molecules. Oxidation occurs when an electron gets transfered from a health molecule to an oxidation agent. This imbalance of electrons causes mutations known as free radicals. This process occurs naturally in each and every one of our bodies, and unfortunately, once it occurs there is no stopping it, it causes a chain reaction and free radicals occur exponentially.
Again, there is nothing we can do to stop oxidation from occuring, but we can slow down the process and eliminate as many free radicals as we can. Studies concerning free radicals, have revealed that they are the root of almost all diseases and illnesses. The mutation of molecules results in the mutation of cells, and the production of free radicals. These unhealthy cells are what causes a majority of diseases, the most common being cancer.
There are many different types of antioxidants, however polyphenols and resveratrol are by far the most abundant. These 2 types of antioxidants play a major role in the upkeep and healthy of the heart and prostate.
